Facebook, is the second most popular social networking site, with 2.7 billion users. Users spend 34 minutes a day on average on the site, and 36% of users say it’s also where they receive their news, which is more than any other social network. Baidu (#7), China’s Most Visited Website, attracted 5.6 billion visits in November. Baidu is also expanding its company, entering the electric vehicle (EV) market in collaboration with China-based carmaker Geely. As video conferencing became more popular during the epidemic, Zoom (#15) became one of the most frequented websites, with 2.7 billion views per month. Similarly, TikTok(#43) became a new inclusion.

The United States remains a prominent participant, with 27 locations on the list. While its worldwide reach is extremely concentrated, the bulk of these sites is owned by a small number of firms.

Microsoft (#28), for example, controls seven of the world’s top sites, including LinkedIn (#25) and Live.com (#16). Amazon(#13) controls five, including Twitch.tv(#32), as well as prominent Amazon-focused domains in Japan, the United Kingdom, and Germany. China has five top websites: Baidu (number seven), QQ (number 34), Bilibili (number 42), TikTok (number 43), and AliExpress (number 47).

With approximately 981 million monthly visitors, Tencent-owned QQ.com is China’s most popular news site. QQ, like WeChat, offers a popular messaging platform. Only four of the world’s most frequented websites are headquartered in both Russia and Japan, with the rest of the globe accounting for ten top sites in total.

Ascending to New Heights

While a few giants undoubtedly dominate global internet trends, what can we make of their recent traffic growth? Google’s monthly visits climbed by 52.9% between June 2019 and November 2020. This pace of growth trails only Instagram (#6) at 89.1% and Twitter (#4) at 67.1% among the world’s most frequented websites. Wikipedia(#5), a non-profit website founded in 2001 by Larry Sanger and Jimmy Wales, grew by more than 30%.

While huge internet corporations, Most Visited Websites have only increased their market share—Google controls about 90% of the search ad industry—a number of regulatory agencies are increasing their scrutiny. According to an October 2020 antitrust assessment, Big Tech is anti-competitive, drawing parallels with oil tycoons of the 19th and 20th centuries. With these fundamental factors in mind, a vital issue arises: is there a limit to their expansion?
